Help bring the Undriver License back

Since 2007, Undriving has issued 15,000+ licenses to people pledging to drive less — walking, biking, busing, carpooling. We’re relaunching in 2026 as a digital program any community can run. And we need your help!

About the Relaunch

The Next Chapter of Undriving

We’re currently assembling a small, dedicated team to build what comes next for Undriving. The program has a strong foundation and proven impact, and we’re building on that with a model that allows anyone, anywhere to participate while also making it easy for partners to bring Undriving into their own communities.

Where We Are Now

Our current focus is to develop a streamlined, web-based Undriver Licensing experience, begin working with early partners, and grow a collaborative team to support the relaunch.

Based on past implementation, there has been consistent demand from both individuals and organizations, and we’re designing the program to meet that demand in a more accessible and scalable way.

How We’re Building

As we build this next phase, we’re putting as much care into how we work together as we are into the program itself. We’re looking for thoughtful, collaborative people who are excited to dig into what’s been built, explore the strength of the existing program, and help shape what comes next.

Join the Team

This is an early-stage effort, with team members contributing on a volunteer basis as we work toward funding in 2026. We expect a range of involvement, including some roles at 10 to 20 hours per week and others that are more flexible.

The most important thing right now is connecting with people who feel drawn to the work. If this resonates, we’d love to hear what kind of involvement feels right for you.

Current priorities: tech and web development, operations, fundraising, design (graphic and UX, program materials), admin, and legal support.

A note on climate pledges — why this matters

There’s an ongoing conversation about the role of individual action in climate work. We agree that shifts from governments and businesses are critical, and that sustained pressure for systemic change is vital.

At the same time, some commitments are being rolled back, making it even more important to sustain momentum in other ways.

Undriving is one way people can take meaningful action now through small, real-world shifts that add up.

Meet the Relaunch Team

Cynthia Levine

Founding Relaunch Director

Cynthia Levine is the Founding Relaunch Director of Undriving and has been connected to the program since its early days. She is working with both new and longtime collaborators to bring Undriving into its next phase.

Her work over the past 25+ years has lived at the intersection of climate, technology, community, and culture. She has built programs and partnerships across mobile applications, content and design, film production, outdoor recreation, and sustainability, with a focus on practical, creative approaches that improve quality of life while addressing climate challenges.

Read a note from Cynthia

“A bit of a confession: I love driving. I grew up in Alaska, where driving is part of the cultural DNA. I also traveled the country with my family in an RV, visiting nearly every U.S. state by the time I was five years old. I can drive big trucks, tiny cars, and stick shifts.

But what do I love even more? Clean air, walking, and bike commuting. There was a time when friends couldn’t imagine me without a bike, and I’ve been car-free both by choice and by circumstance. Along the way, I’ve come to care deeply about how we get around and how it shapes our connection to each other and the places we live.

That’s what draws me to Undriving, and why we’re relaunching the program now. It works, and it has the potential to make an even bigger difference in the years ahead.

I’m also committed to building a nonprofit that is mission-driven and effective, while being collaborative, flexible, and a genuinely good experience for the people involved.

I remember the first time I saw an Undriver Licensing Station and what it sparked in me. If you feel that spark too, I’d love to connect.”

Favorite Undriving habits: taking mass transit with my kids, working remotely, and combining errands.

Current Undriving pledge: keeping up with intense post-surgical PT to get back to all my favorite Undriving activities!
